Congratulations! If you have just found out you are pregnant in Ireland, many decisions will need to be made, with one of the most important being where to give birth. Several options are available, including public, semi-private, private hospital care, and home birth. Each option is associated with different levels of care, costs, and availability. To help with this decision, an overview of each choice is provided below.

Public Maternity Care

Public maternity care is provided free of charge under the HSE’s Maternity and Infant Care Scheme. Antenatal care will be received at a public hospital, midwifery-led unit, or through shared GP care. When the time comes to give birth, midwives will be attending, with doctors available if needed. Postnatal care is provided in the hospital, and typically, discharge occurs within 1-3 days.

Semi-Private Maternity Care

For those who opt for semi-private care, shorter waiting times for appointments and increased continuity of care will be provided. However, additional costs will be incurred. A consultant or a member of their team will be seen during appointments, and post-birth, a semi-private ward will be shared. Costs can vary depending on the hospital and insurance coverage, so checking individual policies is advised.

Private Maternity Care

Private maternity care allows for consultant-led care throughout the entire pregnancy and birth experience. A private room may be provided after birth if available, offering greater comfort and privacy. However, this option is the most expensive, with costs ranging from €3,000–€8,000, excluding consultant fees.

Home Birth in Ireland

For low-risk pregnancies, home birth is an option. Two main routes exist for home birth in Ireland:

  1. HSE Home Birth Service – This option is free and offered in certain areas, with community midwives assigned to oversee care.
  2. Private Midwives Ireland – This route provides greater flexibility and continuity of care, but costs will apply.

How to Decide?

When pregnant in Ireland, choosing the right birth option depends on individual preferences, health and budget. It is essential to conduct thorough research, ask for recommendations, and explore all options. To access unbiased information and peer support, joining local parenting support groups like Cuidiú and Antenatal Ireland is highly recommended.

Wherever you decide to give birth, it is important to educate yourself and learn how to advocate for your choices. Attending one of my antenatal classes can help you feel empowered and prepared, whether in a supportive group setting or in the privacy of your own home.
