Top 5 Birth Positions for Home Birth in Ireland
The NPEC Home Birth triennial report states that the top 5 “Maternal Positions for Birth” are
💫Kneeling
💫All Fours
💫Sitting
💫Standing
💫Squatting
Why is this important? When we (as a society) think about birth, we may conjure up images of people screaming on their backs when the reality is different. If a person is left without interventions and with the ability to listen to their bodies they will generally move into a position to birth their baby where their pelvis is upright, forward and open. This creates space in the pelvis and allows the baby the move freely through.
When we lie on our backs, the space is smaller, adding a challenge to birth.
This is why it’s important to know about interventions in hospitals and how they may impact on how you birth your baby.
All of this is discussed in my antenatal classes. Link in bio to book into my October class today.
*This information is recorded at home births but not at hospital births in Ireland. Midwives I stand to be corrected!
